Best Chinese Children's Books for Dragon Boat Festival (端午节) 2026

Dragon Boat Festival — 端午节 (Duānwǔ Jié) — falls on June 19, 2026 this year. If you're raising bilingual kids or just trying to bring more Chinese culture into your home, this is one of the most compelling holidays to actually celebrate. It has everything a good story needs: a loyal hero, a corrupt court, racing boats, and sticky rice dumplings. Your kids are going to love it.

We put together this guide to help you find the right Chinese children's books (中文绘本) about Dragon Boat Festival — and a few simple ideas for making the holiday feel real at home, even if you're not surrounded by family who grew up celebrating it.

What Is Dragon Boat Festival? (A Quick Primer for Kids)

The short version: about 2,300 years ago, a poet and statesman named Qu Yuan (屈原, Qū Yuán) was exiled from his kingdom after corrupt officials turned the king against him. When his kingdom eventually fell, he was so heartbroken that he drowned himself in the Miluo River. The local people raced out in boats to try to save him — and threw sticky rice dumplings into the water to keep the fish away from his body.

That's the origin of dragon boat races (龙舟赛, lóngzhōu sài) and zongzi (粽子, zòngzi). The holiday is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month every year.

Dragon Boat Festival 端午节

Another hit from Bitty Bao! This bilingual board book with inline pinyin is about the dragon boat festival and it's a book about shapes. Your child your learn how to say various shapes in Chinese and English, all incorporated into a short, approachable story about 端午节.

Little Zongzi, Little Zongzi 小粽子,小粽子

I absolutely love the books by this author, 卷儿, they are all very whimsical and personify various Chinese foods. In this book, there is a rivalry between sweet 粽子 and savory 粽子. Which one will win? Of course, most important is to unite and celebrate all of the 粽子 during the dragon boat festival.
