My language learning journey
Hi, I’m Nancy—a Chinese American mom with a passion for sharing my heritage through language and stories. Growing up, I spent many Saturdays at Chinese School learning to read and write. While I’m not a native-level speaker, I’m proficient enough to enjoy simple texts, and this foundation has been invaluable as I teach my daughter Chinese.
The challenge of finding the right books
Like many parents, I’ve seen the research about the benefits of reading to children. But when I looked for Chinese books that matched my needs, I faced a challenge:
- Engaging and fun stories
- Vocabulary I could comfortably read
- Pinyin for characters I didn’t recognize
Finding books that checked all these boxes was a struggle, and I knew many of my friends faced the same challenges.

That’s why I started Lotus Leaf Books, a curated collection of Chinese children’s books. Each book comes with a pinyin guide, making them accessible for those who are not native speakers.
