The benefits of a having a home library of Chinese children's books
Share
The central question that I asked myself while starting Lotus Leaf Books was, "Why would someone buy Chinese children's books?" There are many ways to expose a child to Chinese - speaking to them, having a Chinese nanny, attending Chinese immersion school, watching Chinese TV shows, or even borrowing Chinese books from the library. Why is it important to have books in the home?
To be honest, I did not grow up with Chinese children's books at home. I was born in the US and my exposure to Chinese was through my parents, who spoke only Mandarin Chinese to me at home. I didn't start owning Chinese books until I was elementary aged, when I would visit China and bring back books that I was able to read on my own.
However, we're in a slightly different situation now. English is the default language my husband and I speak to each other and my husband isn't of Chinese origin. I have to make a conscious effort to speak to my daughter in Chinese. Books play an important role in our bilingual language efforts. Books introduce both of us to more vocabulary. They are fun and engaging!
Why should you have a home library of Chinese children's books?
Encourage daily exposure
When your child sees Chinese books regularly at home, they begin to recognize Chinese characters, understand that the language is valued in the home, and become more inclined to pick up the language over time.
Support screen-free learning
If you are trying to limit or reduce screen time, especially for younger children, physical books are a great way to keep children entertained while exposing them to Chinese.
Create a reading habit
Having a daily or bedtime storytime session creates a habit of reading in Chinese. For families raising bilingual children, daily storytime in Chinese can foster a love for the language while also allowing for a bonding experience. Having books in your home make it easier to develop this habit.
